However, in terms of attaining a six pack of abs in relation to building a bigger chest, sculpting your abs takes a little more work, education, and discipline.

Eating healthy is the most important by far. Eat healthy clean, natural foods to keep you body full of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and water. Here are some good foods to eat: Tuna, chicken, peanuts, protein supplements, fruits and vegetables, real fruit juice, whole wheat or grain bread, fresh water. Eating sweets and bad fats cause us to be sluggish and our metabolism to slow. When our metabolism slows down we can’t lose the fat. In order for your six pack abs to show through, you must have a low body fat percentage. That means losing as much body fat as you can so that you get down to 4-8%.

Burning off excess body fat through intense cardio sessions at least three to four times a week will ensure that your toned abs will make their debut. Activities like jogging, hiking, running, swimming, jumping rope or the elliptical will get the heart pumping and give great results. Burning fat and building muscle are two different physiological processes, and you can build muscle and burn fat at the same time! Cardio exercises are also important in building six pack abs fast. You can alternate low intensity cardio workouts and high intensity workouts to accelerate your six pack abs building progress. Cardio, too, will help kick up your metabolism. Just be sure to avoid cardio-overdrive, which is doing too much cardio that prevents your body from recovering.

Group Health Insurance

Group health insurance through an employer is one of the best choices available in health insurance. The first thing that has to be done is to get free quotes from different health insurance companies. This is easily available on the Internet, wherein you fill in some details to get your health insurance quote. Another thing that has to be taken into consideration is the health insurance company’s financial ratings. This gives us the financial strength of the health insurance company, and whether it is capable of clearing claims made to the company. The ratings can be found out though free resources like Moody’s, A.M. Best and Weiss and eHealthInsurance, which are all found on the Internet.

Next, check the employment and educational histories of the doctors associated with the health insurance company. Trusting the physicians and feeling content with the care you receive from the health insurance company is invaluable. Customer satisfaction is another criterion for choosing the right health insurance company. The health insurance company should respond quickly to your requests and questions. Having this kind of disease is really terrible because there are cases in which itching doesn't stop and is really painful. So with this treatment plans, an eczema sufferer can somehow feel relieved and appeased. Here are the common treatments for eczema.

Moisturizers. Specialists recommend frequent skin moisturizing. Dryness of the skin aggravates the problem of eczema; hence it is important to always retain moisture in the skin by regularly applying moisturizers. You can use creams and ointments as means and source of moisture. Emollients are great for dry skin, too. Ask your doctor so you can better find the right one for you.

Oral antihistamines medications. These fight the histamines that trigger symptoms of inflammation. Histamines are naturally produced in the body. So upon taking oral antihistamines, at one point, the symptoms of eczema are reduced. Some types of these medicines may cause drowsiness. Thus, before getting them over the counter, always double check by asking a chemist or a doctor.

Corticosteroids or Topical steroids. These creams have different strengths. High strength ones usually have side effect especially when used on the face. It may cause thinning of the skin when used for a long time. Walk Walk whenever you get the chance. If you're going somewhere that's walking distance, don't take your car. Not only will you save money of gas, you're going to get a great workout. When at work, don't take the elevator. Just walk up a few floors. Using the stairs is one of the best exercises you can get during the weekdays. For those who have gym memberships, it's good to get in a good 30-minute exercise on the treadmill, whether you walk or jog, it makes no difference. Many fitness experts highly recommend that you try and get in a 30-minute workout every day; whether it's just going for a walk, a jog or using the weight machines at your local gym. 30-minutes of exercise daily is very important in staying in shape.

2. Use fitness DVDs Too cold to go outside for a walk and you can't get to the gym? Invest in a few fitness DVDs, some weights and a fitness ball. With these things, you can stay fit in the comfort of your own living room. Just fall out of bed in the morning and pop in your 15-minute workout DVD. It's THAT easy!

3. Pilates Pilates is one of the best exercises to strengthen your body's core. Pilates classes are available at most gyms, but your gym doesn't offer it, just pop in your Pilates DVD and you're good to go. Just remember to purchase a mat.

4. Yoga Stressed about work and bills? Yoga is a meditative exercise that helps build muscles from holding some difficult poses. This will help you relax and get toned all at the same time.

5. Spinning Spin classes are amazing! I take them every winter and I highly recommend it. Cycling will help you shed pounds and get your legs nice and firm. Many gyms and community colleges will offer spin classes for pretty cheap. If you would like, get your own bike, crank up your stereo or iPod and get riding! It's a killer workout that does wonders.

Laser Hair Removal Explained

A common way to remove unwanted hair from the body is by using a Laser. In its simplest form, a lazer is passed over an area of human skin which destroys the roots, or follicles, of the hair. Laser hair removal can be used on any part of the body where hair is located. The reaction is pretty much immediate and many people might require several treatments in the specific area for it to be successful. In women, many might choose to have the treatment on the face, legs or even the bikini line, and many men are using the same treatments commonly for the back, chest, shoulders, even the legs. One benefit is that in most cases, the hair is removed permanently so not to require regular shaving.
If you decide that you want to remove hair through laser treatments, there are many risks involved, as it is imperative that the treatment is undertaken with qualified professionals. Skin can react by burning and scarring if the procedure is not administered correctly. Even if the treatment is administered by a professional, laser hair removal can still darken the skin and cause blisters in people who have sensitive skin. By planning the procedure correctly including consulting professionals and even your doctor and ensure that the treatment occurs correctly.

Visit Our Site - Hair Care Product

Fast Hair Growth Tips

There are many people who find their hair thinning at an alarming rate. Some of these factors may include such things as your health, your diet, your environment, your hormones and the amount of stress in your life. Some people have been known to have their hair fallout from being under too much stress or from certain medical conditions or even from certain medications that they are taking. Many people also find that as they age, their hair will grow much slower. All of these factors will vary with each person.

You diet plays an important role where your hair is concerned. You need plenty of nutrients in your to help feed the hair follicles. If you are lacking in nutrition it can show up in the condition of your hair. For instance, when you're sick your hair can look dull and flat. If you want your hair to be at its best then you need to be sure to have a well balanced diet. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants that will help your hair grow quicker.

You should also incorporate foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids as they can help to reduce swelling in the scalp. This will help increase the blood flow to the follicles, which in turn promotes hair growth.

Massaging the scalp daily can also help to promote more blood flow to the scalp for faster hair growth. A person smoking 40 cigarettes a day is more vulnerable heart attack.

Different Typs Of Yoga mats

• Cotton yoga mats – these are mats made of cotton. If all this is taken lightly, it can be fatal. To avoid all these problems a person suffering from high blood pressure must take effective treatment. The most important thing to be done is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. A drug alone is not sufficient to treat this disease.

A healthy life style refers to work out to make your heart beating slightly faster than normal from time to time. Work out does not include going to gym it can be performed in some other ways for instance house chores, gardening, walking the dog or playing active games with children. You can make your heart beating faster by any of the following ways. You should do some exercise also. You should also make some changes in your diet. If you like sauces, pickles and other pre-cooked meals, you will have to avoid them because all these things are sodium rich and lead to hypertension. You should also reduce intake of saturated fats on the other hand you should increase intake of oily fish or fish oil capsules, fresh fruits and vegetables.

Signs of Hearing

Are you always wishing people would speak up or that they mumble? You may eve believe they are not speaking properly. Take a breath and realize that it could be you with the problem. You may be experiencing loss of hearing. Others may notice that you always have the volume of the television or stereo up high but to you it is normal. It may be a good idea to get a hearing test done and stop blaming it on that old equipment...
You may have grown used to asking those around you to repeat what they say. Are you regularly misunderstanding people? If you have to rely more on facial expression and body language to understand others it may be your hearing. These are very real indications of possible loss of hearing.
Have you worked regularly with firearms, in a factory or with power tools? These can be very noisy environments. If you have failed to use ear plugs there is a chance your hearing has suffered. Do you always listen to very loud music? Is the home cinema essential? All these things can take their toll over time..
Is it difficult to follow a conversation in a group? Do you find it exhausting trying to keep up? This could make you feel more nervous or stressed, in social situations, because you can't keep up with what's going on.
Is there a history of hearing problems in your family? It can be hereditary. This could mean you are susceptible. Heart, circulatory or thyroid problems could also mean you are more at risk. Diabetes can also lead to problems.
If you suffer from frequent ear infections or dizziness it might not be down to accumulated ear wax. Some problems are caused by disease as opposed to environment.

Anti-Aging

The quality of the air that you breathe will affect your health and in doing so have a direct bearing on your lifespan.

Everyone knows of the damage that cigarette smoking can do to a person's health and similarly by breathing in the second hand smoke from other smokers.

If you are a smoker then quitting smoking will help to reduce the damage that has already been done from the smoking and will certainly help to extend your life. The cheapest and easiest foods are those that are normally the least healthy. If you give your child the choice between healthy food and junk food, you normally won't like the results.

Even though it isn't possible to get a child to like all healthy foods, there are some ways to get your child to try and hopefully like at least a few of them. You can be as creative as you like, as getting kids to eat healthy foods can be a little harder than you may think.

- Sneak the healthy food in. Even though it would be great if your kid understood the importance of fruits and vegetables, this isn't always possible. If you can't get them to eat good food willingly, there are ways to sneak them in, such as making muffins out of bananas or apples, or pizza with spinach on it.

- Call fruits and vegetables by funny names. You can refer to broccoli as "trees", making them more fun to eat. There are many different names you can call fruits and vegetables, even making up your own if you prefer. Most kids prefer to eat foods that sound fun.

- Make the foods taste better. Ranch dressing is great for broccoli, while peanut butter is a great topping for celery. There are several combinations for vegetables that can make them taste much better. You can let your child pick a topping for a vegetable, even if it's something you wouldn't normally like yourself.

- Dress the vegetables up. Just as much as calling them names help kids eat healthy foods, making them look funny also helps. You can do this by making funny designs on the plate, or setting them up to look like people. When you buy make up products check out the ingredients they have and always but them with your skin care in mind. If you have old cosmetics and make up on your dressing table or in your bathroom cabinet that are passed their ‘best by’ date dispose of them safely. Normally stimulated by eating certain foods, if not pregnancy, or the catch of a Juste of sleep after having eaten a heavy meal, a great number of people suffer from the acid backward flow at the same time or another.

The usual cause of GERD is the increase in acidity or gastric acid production in the body, obesity, pregnancy, or tight-fitting apparels, these all can add to the problem. The yeast infections are also thought to be one of the causes of GERD-like symptoms.

An added ironical cause of the GERD is the insufficient production of stomach acid in the body. The explanation says that the valve, the hollow organ with a flap that insure the one-way course of fluid through the organ, once emptied triggers acidity in the intestines. If the valve fails to open, the contents of the stomach will be blended into the esophagus, and then irritation occurs.

• Proper Diet: the natural way to cure Acid Reflux is through change in their eating habits. A good number of people affected by GERD found success in following this method. Avoid the food ingredients which can intensify heart burn such as caffeine, soft drinks, and smoking. Avoid eating two hours before sleeping; likewise, avoid lying down after taking meal. These are the regular suggested change in lifestyle.

• Another easy way to treat GERD is to elevate the head of the bed. The pharmacologic therapy, the combination of prevention of food two hours before sleeping and the rise of the head of the bed, there is a great chance for a patient to gain a 95 percent relief. The rise of the head of the bed is suggested to range for only 6 to 8 inches or 20 cm. Using this method the backflow of gastric fluids will be hampered.

• Drug Treatment: Drugs reduce the secretion of the gastric acid, for instance and famotidine and omeprazole lessen the secretion of gastric acid and the Antacids counteract the acid.

Beautiful Shiny Hair Tips

Use Birthmark hair mask: brew eight strawberries with one-tablespoon mayonnaise. And this makes a bad effect on your health.Obviously a type 1 diabetic has a completely different way of doing this, namely the intravenous use of insulin via dailey injections but the type 2 diabetic should be concerned with more natural ways to lower blood sugar.
How is this accomplished? There are three main aspects to controlling blood sugar levels for type 2 diabetics, unfortunately, these rules do not apply to the type 1 in quite the same way since the nature of their condition is hinged upon a different set of rules.

The 3 natural ways of lowering blood sugar are as follows.

1. Controlling the level of carbohydrates eaten on a daily basis. When we talk about carbs, we mean all carbs, not just biscuits and cakes.
Pasta, rice, grains, pulses, fruit and fruit juice, sugar in your coffee, flavoured yogurt, ready made soups, wholemeal bread, root vegetables, cereals. The list is nearly infinite and once you start to read the back of every pack of food you purchase, you will realize just how many foods contain carbs. They are everywhere.

2. Start your day either by skipping breakfast or having one based more around protein, fat, low carbohydrate nuts and vegetables. Keeping those so called sugar cravings at bay starts with never enticing your system with them in the first place.
Much like when a smoker lights up his first cigarette early in the morning and from then on kicks the nicotene cycle into play.

3. Another golden natural way to lower blood sugar is to eat absolutely no carbs after about 5 in the evening or more to the point, after you finish work, this may be a little different if you work nights but you get the point. Since your body burns carbs far better when you are active, namely working, it will keep levels down so much better during the day.
Come the night time and your second helping of pasta carbonara later, things wont be quite so dynamic from your metabolisms point of view.

How Health Coaching Makes You a Winner

Baby steps are a key component to successful health coaching. What are baby steps and how do they work? Baby steps are very small changes used to develop new health habits. For example, let's say your goal is to have a more active lifestyle. You've gained some weight and are not currently doing any type of exercise. A baby step for you might be to take a twenty minute walk during the week. Sounds ridiculously simple, doesn't it? It's supposed to. How likely do you think you can achieve that goal? Quite likely, right?

Now let's take a look at a different goal you could set for the same situation. You decide to combat your sedentary lifestyle by joining a health club. Your goal is classes three times a week. How likely do you feel you can achieve that goal? What if work is very hectic and the kids have extra curricular activities? Could you do three classes in that week? How about in the following week? Could you do three classes then? If you are like most people with health club memberships, eventually it falls out of your schedule. But if your goal was one twenty minute walk a week, even if work was crazy and the kids needed you, do you think you could still work it in?

Baby steps do something very important for you. Psychologically, it sets you up with a winning attitude. The goals may start out very simple but they're designed to set you up for success. Think back to that health club membership. How did you feel when you didn't go to that class? Did you feel good about yourself? Did guilt start to settle in? Every time you achieve a goal, it's an affirmation that you are a success. It's empowering. After using baby steps for a while you feel you can move on to a more substantial goal. Baby steps make you a winner. After all, what would you rather do, beat yourself up or give yourself a pat on the back?

A second key element to choosing a health coach is the psychology of change. Researchers have shown that there is a very distinct process to creating lasting change. In fact, there are six psychological stages to change. When this process isn't implemented, it's hard to achieve lasting change. A good example of this is rehab programs. When a person enters a rehab program they immediately must stop using alcohol or drugs. Seems like a good idea, right? But if it is, how come so many people end up going through rehab multiple times? Answer: the psychological stages of change weren't implemented. The action stage doesn't come until stage four. These people need to be guided through the first three stages before they can be successful at stage four.

That's how it goes with you, too, and your health goals. We frequently rush to take action before we are ready and then we fail. To give yourself the best advantage in achieving your goals, when you are looking for a health coach, be sure to use one knowledgeable in the psychology of change and the use of baby steps. A good way to learn more about a particular coach is to have a free session. Most coaches offer a complimentary session for this very reason.

Acne and Its Causes

There are a number of theories on why people suffer from acne, but what are the true causes - and can it actually be prevented?

Understanding Acne

Acne is a term used to describe the presence of reddish spots on the skin. It can be unpleasant to look at and it can cause a lot of embarrassment to those who suffer from the condition.

Scientifically it is initiated by blocked hair follicles. It is thought that the follicles become blocked after abnormal flaking of the cells occurs. The blocked follicle then enlarges and ruptures, which causes oil to leak out into the skin. This causes a swelling and inflammation occurs which is what gives the spots their red color.

The true cause of acne is not actually known. However there are many theories as to what could contribute to the condition.

Hormones, Stress and Bacteria

The most commonly accepted theory is that acne is caused by hormones. This is especially the case in adolescents where acne flares up and then disappears as the person ages. More specifically it is the hormones known as androgens that are thought to be to blame and they are what cause the sebaceous glands to over-stimulate and produce more oil. These hormones are also thought to be to blame for women who develop acne during their period. It is the extra oil produced by the sebaceous glands that mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria and which blocks the pores, causing acne.

Another prevalent theory is that stress can play a big part in acne. This is because when we are stressed, our bodies produce certain hormones like cortisol - which is well known to aggravate acne. So whilst stress is not thought to directly cause acne, it can actually make the condition worse.

Bacteria may also influence the appearance of acne on one's skin. More specifically, it is the bacteria known as "Propionibacterium acne" that is thought to be the problem. This is because they produce a certain substance which can cause redness as well as irritation to the skin. The enzymes which they create can also cause irritation because they dissolve the sebum.

Although nobody knows the true cause of acne, the above mentioned are just three factors which are thought to contribute to the problem.

Two Common Acne Myths

One thing which many people believe when it comes to the cause of acne is that it is caused by a lack of hygiene. Dirt and cleanliness have been linked many times to the condition, but in fact they have nothing to do with causing acne. If you look at it logically, it is easy to see why people would assume that acne is caused by dirt. After all the condition occurs when the pores are blocked and so if you have dirt build up on the skin, it could block the pores. However, it will not cause acne.

Happy Blogging

Visits our Health Blogs:--
Health Plus Pharmacy - Health Related Terms - Whole Fitness Issues

Supplementing For A Healthy Life

We are inhabitants of a world that has become fast-paced as time passes. Remembering and keeping religious track of the number of vegetables, grains, fruits and meat servings we get on a daily basis is great help. Journal keeping your progress on your food intake is absolutely healthy. But it causes an extra, and as we often put it, unnecessary burden. In the advent of convenience, nutritionists recommend popping a multi-vitamin, but we ask is it enough? Promotions on capsules or pills almost guarantee everlasting life. To the busy person, the situation can be confusing and tricky. To make things simpler, take these quick tips on what popular vitamins do to your body, the people who need them and when or where they can be acquired. Beta carotene, an antioxidant which helps neutralize the body's free radicals, may be taken in at least small doses, but not enough to warrant it to be included in a multi-vitamin. An intake of 3 to 6 mg daily is enough. The good thing is that, beta carotene can easily be acquired through eating fruits and vegetables. Munch on leafy greens such as spinach, carrots and red and green peppers. Two or three servings of bright or dark colored vegetables a day is enough to sustain you with beta carotene. What does calcium do? Grade school science taught us that it keeps our bones strong and prevents osteoporosis. Recently, calcium was found to aid in the fight against cancer. Researches also link calcium with losing excess weight effectively. While milk and other dairies make calcium abundant, lactose intolerant people may opt to take 1,000 - 1,200 mg of calcium dosage. Those who don't consume three cups of milk in a day also need separate calcium supplements whatever their age is. A doctor's tip is to divide the calcium supplement into two 500-600 mg doses each to help the body in absorbing the nutrient better. Vitamin E has been proven to help lower the risk of any cardiovascular sickness and keeps our immune system up. The dosage shouldn't exceed 400 IU daily, according to doctors, so multivitamins are expected to contain the recommended amount of Vitamin E. The nutrient is also abundant in nuts and seeds. The intake of 400 mcg of folic acid is vital to women of productive age because it prevents birth defects. Pregnant women will need a pre-natal multivitamin with 600 mcg folic acid in it. Folic acid also helps lower the risk of colon cancer. It is also recommended to women who take alcohol. Recent medical breakthroughs say that the daily intake of its proper dosage may help prevent cancer. As such, selenium is important to women who regularly smoke or party. While most multivitamins contain 20 mcg, the selenium dosage as required daily may be acquired from nuts or fish.
Latest Seo Services & Latset Seo Tips By Seo Support

Using the Best Skin Peel

In the past, the best skin peel was only available from a dermatologist or salon. This is no longer true. You can now have the benefits of a medical grade facial peel in the comfort of your own home. The most effective peels on the market contain Tricholoracetic Acid (TCA). TCA is a non toxic chemical that has been used for over 30 years and is considered completely safe. It is one of the deeper peels, used to rejuvenate the skin and improve the condition of the skin.

TCA peels successfully treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, wrinkles, blotchy skin, blackheads, discoloration from sun exposure, age spots, acne scarring, excessive oil and dull complexion. The pores of your skin are unblocked, revealing clearer skin. Your complexion will be smoother with improved texture. Fine lines and wrinkles are softened after treatment. The skin is tightened for a younger appearance.

Esthetician’s Choice is the best skin peel and is now available for home use.

Before Treatment:

Talk to your doctor if you are taking prescription medications. Accutane is one medication that should not be used after a peel. Talk to your doctor and stop taking the medication before having a peel. You should avoid using other exfoliation products in the week before you use a home TCA peel. Also, avoid tanning either outside or in a tanning bed.

Directions for a Home Peel:

Esthetician’s Choice can be used in two strengths. Use the product full strength for a deeper peel to improve bad acne, wrinkling or skin discoloration. The product can be diluted for a gentler, surface peeling. Follow the included directions for diluting the product. The peel can be used once a month for very damaged skin. It’s important to wait at least four weeks between treatments to allow the skin time to heal completely.

Apply the product with a cotton swab. The peel should be left on the skin for about two to four minutes. Rinse well with slightly cool water to remove the product. Don’t rub or use a washcloth. Most people will feel a slight tingling sensation when it is applied. You should feel little or no discomfort after it is rinsed away. If you do experience slight irritation, apply icy water or ice to soothe the skin.

Immediately after treatment, you will notice a slight red color to the skin, like mild sunburn. This fades in a day or so and the skin continues to peel for the next few days. Once peeled, clearer, firmer skin is revealed. Taking good care of your skin after the peel will result in better, faster healing.

After the Peel:

o Gently wash the skin with a very mild cleanser in the days after. Use only your hands and not a washcloth or a scrubber, which can cause irritation.

o Keep the skin moist with an oil free moisturizing project.

o Don’t use any other exfoliation products for at least a week after the peel.

o Avoid sun exposure and tanning. This can cause discoloration. If you go outside, wear a good sunblock with an SPF of at least 30.

o Don’t use make up for at least a week. After this time, use high quality, natural make up that won’t clog the skin. Look for oil free products to avoid clogging the pores again. Natural products or mineral make up is best.

o Avoid harsh prescription ointments and medications such as Accutane. These can cause scarring and discoloration.

o Taking good care of yourself speeds the healing process. You will look better and feel better.

o Drink plenty of water to flush the skin and replenish the moisture in your body.

o Get enough sleep. At least eight hours each night. This is important for healing and is good for the complexion.

o Eat healthy foods and take vitamins. Good nutrition is important for your skin and your overall health.

o Practice good skin care to keep your complexion clear and soft. Use natural products that are made for your skin type.

o Prayer, reading the Bible and meditating on Scripture helps reduce stress, which aids in healing. Prayer has been proven in studies to increase healing in all areas of the body

Links

Personal Injury Cases - We are the leading law firm having multiple attorneys, support staff, and several offices throughout North-Central Florida. This removes some of the dead skin cells in the top layer of skin cells that often contribute to trapping the hairs.

Exfoliating options include creams, lotions, or body gels, a slightly abrasive washcloth or glove specifically designed for exfoliation. Check at the beauty counter at your local department store.

#4 :--Do not exfoliate the skin if you already have ingrown pubic hairs as further skin irritation may result.

#5 :--When waxing, be sure to pull the hair out by the roots. Do not allow the hair to break below the skin surface.

#6 :--Use ingrown hair treatment. It prevents pubic ingrown hair and eliminates existing ingrown hair within days.

Additional note: For ingrown hairs which are deep, sterilize a pair of needle-nosed tweezers with rubbing alcohol and individually lift each ingrown hair out of its follicle. Wipe the area with alcohol afterwards and shave.

If needle-nosed tweezers are not available, wipe a pin or needle and the ingrown area with rubbing alcohol, then carefully release the hair in the direction that it grows using the tip of the needle only. After the hair is released, wipe the skin with alcohol again.

I work in education equity

This question is in the top 10 that I get asked when I tell someone I work in education equity. Some assume that I must support all girls high schools as the answer for increasing women in non-traditional fields for a variety of reasons including that girls won't be distracted by the boys, without boys there is no harassment (obviously stated by a man or a woman who forgot what high school was like!), or whipping out the old adage that girls just do better in math & science (my bread & butter) in an all girls classroom.

Simply put, no. I don't.

There are valid reasons to send your child to a single-sex school and I admit to daydreaming about having gone to Smith. But that is more about Smith not the all women thing. A few weeks ago on the DC Metro Moms Blog (sister to the Chicago Moms Blog where I contribute), KC mused about what she would be like if she had gone to an all-girls school and wonders if the only way her daughter will come out strong is to send her to an all-girls school. As fate would have it an email popped into my inbox a few days later about a new study out. On single sex schools! The Goddess does love me.

KC is correct when she notes that:

My usual response is that a lot of the effects of an all-girls classroom is from the smaller class size. In "University Students from Single-Sex and Coeducational High Schools," Karpiak et. al, surveyed current students at the University of Scranton about their majors, high school experience, and attitudes towards gender roles. They also looked at historical data on students from both groups (SSHS & CoEdHS) about their declared major freshman year and their actual degree major.

The results?

In sum, students from single-sex high schools entered college less concentrated
in majors traditional for their gender and more likely to have declared a
gender-neutral major than those from coeducational high schools. However, by
graduation, the advantage for women from single-sex high schools had
disappeared. In contrast, men from single-sex high schools were significantly
more likely than those from coeducational schools to hold gender-neutral majors
at graduation.

Further:

Thus in order for the real increase in strength girls obtain in their all-girls high schools, society as a whole must also change or else they slide backwards. Of course by society we also mean that the men of the world must become more egalitarian. But what if they are off in all-boys high schools? Are they becoming more egalitarian as one might assume from their higher rates of enrolling in non-traditional male majors?

So while our girls are off getting all Buffy-ified, knowing who Alice Paul is, and finding their voice, our boys might be off learning that Harriet Nelson is the ideal mate. When the two meet in college or even later in the workforce, I doubt this will lead to ideal dating situations much less work environments. It really is sad to think that any benefits that girls gain in not having boys in the classroom is lost because the boys don't have girls in their classrooms. Even when we're making boys more egalitarian, we're kinda losing!

Of course the study team acknowledges that this study needs to be done with a much larger and more diverse sample, but it really is one of the first to look at the lasting effects of going to a single-sex high school. And in the end do we want our daughters to enter as engineering majors or become engineers?

To KC I say, there are many strong women who have emerged from co-ed public schools. Your daughter can be one of them. But that is a decision for her and the family to make. Heck, those of us who went to a co-ed school might be stronger because we survived.

7 tips To Prevent Heart Attack

Heart attack. The words alone can send a chill down even the strongest man's spine, and with good reason. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for Americans. Men have a greater risk of heart attack at a younger age than women. But the risk increases for women as they near menopause and, eventually, surpasses that of men. If the nicest thing we can say about someone is that he has a good heart, the most important thing we can say is that he has a healthy heart. You probably can decrease your risk of heart attack by changing your lifestyle in the following areas:

1. Keep tabs on your cholesterol levels To control your cholesterol, avoid saturated fat, eat fewer calories, and try to eat foods rich in fiber, such as vegetables and fruits. If your cholesterol is very high, drugs to lower it may be an option for you.

2. Ask your doctor about aspirin Daily intake of aspirin may reduce your risk of heart attack by thinning your blood and preventing clots from forming. However, you should talk with your doctor before doing so because aspirin is not safe for everyone.

3. Drink moderately Studies show that one drink a day (12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of liquor) may have a protective effect on your heart. However, the effects are more beneficial if you are middle-aged or older and have suffered a heart attack or stroke or already have cardiovascular disease.

4. Exercise Regular exercise is good for you because it helps reduce stress, cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and excess weight, and it can make your heart stronger, leading to a lower pulse rate. But overdoing exercise isn't a good thing, especially weight-lifting exercises that can trigger heart attacks. Talk with your doctor before beginning an exercise program.

5. Relax Because stress is such a factor in heart disease, eliminating or decreasing it can do wonders for your cardiovascular health.

6. Control your blood pressure Your heart has to work harder to push blood through your body when your blood pressure is high. This causes your heart to enlarge and can speed up atherosclerosis. Fortunately, by reducing your diastolic blood pressure by only 2mm Hg (millimeters per mercury), you can decrease your risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. The average healthy blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg.

7. Stop smoking Smoking is harmful to your cardiovascular health. Smoking also clogs your arteries and in the process, raises the blood pressure in those clogged arteries. This condition helps to double the heart attack risk for smokers compared with non-smokers. Therefore, as soon as you stop, your body immediately starts to bounce back and improve your cardiovascular health.

Related Links

The Electronic Zoo -If you have problems accessing ejournal resources please contact the ejournals administrator All journals provide full-text,Get up-to-date information on the hottest gadgets and gear, with detailed reviews and product comparisons on About Electronics and Gadgets.

Health Plus Pharmacy -We are in the preventive health, fitness and safety business. Or, in simpler terms, why did you wait so long to do something about your weight problem? As insensitive or lacking in understanding as this question may seem, this is actually something that my wife asked me a few years ago. Of course, what makes it so funny coming from her is that she is someone who has never had a weight problem and cannot even remotely understand what it's like to overeat on a continuous basis or use food to handle stress or cravings. So, in viewing the world from her perspective, it's literally impossible for her to understand how I could have put on 100 pounds over an extended period of time without ever stopping along the way to do something about it. The question really has nothing to do with a single event in my life or a call to action, but it's more related to why I didn't stop the insanity along the way. Why did I choose to ignore the problem and allow the weight to build up over time? And it is this simple question that really allowed me to get to know myself better. It allowed me to come to terms with the understanding that I wasn't necessarily ignoring the problem, but more that I was ignoring the causes. Meaning, the act of dieting and the need to comfort myself had very little room for one another. So, it was with great pain that I was able to come to terms with my own issues and carry on. However, do not think for a moment that my issues or your issues are so black and white. Meaning, they are often shades of grey, including overeating, comforting ourselves, dealing with unhappiness, and an overall lack or non-existence of exercise. In fact, this question is often the easiest to answer for those that do have identified problems (stress or comfort eating). However, for those that have not come to terms with their own issues yet or truly put on weight because of bad eating habits or a love of food, this question can be incredibly difficult. In many ways, whether you have issues or not, the truth is still the same. We all put on weight over an extended period of time, watched it happen in the mirror and did nothing about it. To an outsider, it can all seem very crazy. But, to those reading this and having lived this experience, it's a very real thing and can also be equally confusing with hindsight. But in working through this puzzle, it is also one of the biggest steps forward that you can make towards your own understanding of yourself and long-term success.

Heart Disease and Women

If you think you're having a heart attack, call 911 right away. Tell the operator your symptoms and that you think you're having a heart attack.

Do women of color need to worry about heart disease?
Yes. African American and Hispanic American/Latina women are more likely to get heart disease because they tend to have more risk factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, high blood pressure, and diabetes than white women. Women of color also are more likely than white women to die of heart disease. If you're a woman of color, take steps to reduce your risk factors.

What is heart disease?
Heart disease is a number of abnormal conditions affecting the heart and the blood vessels in the heart. Types of heart disease include:

• Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common type and is the leading cause of heart attacks. When you have CAD, your arteries become hard and narrow. Blood has a hard time getting to the heart, so the heart does not get all the blood it needs. CAD can lead to:

• Angina. Angina is chest pain or discomfort that happens when the heart does not get enough blood. It may feel like a pressing or squeezing pain, often in the chest, but sometimes the pain is in the shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It can also feel like indigestion (upset stomach). Angina is not a heart attack, but having angina means you are more likely to have a heart attack.

• Heart attack. A heart attack occurs when an artery is severely or completely blocked, and the heart does not get the blood it needs for more than 20 minutes.

• Heart failure occurs when the heart is not able to pump blood through the body as well as it should. This
means that other organs, which normally get blood from the heart, do not get enough blood. It does NOT mean that the heart stops.

Signs of heart failure include:
• Shortness of breath (feeling like you can't get enough air)
• Swelling in feet, ankles, and legs
• Extreme tiredness
• Heart arrhythmias are changes in the beat of the heart. Most people have felt dizzy, faint, out of breath or had chest pains at one time. These changes in heartbeat are, for most people, harmless. As you get older, you are more likely to have arrhythmias. Don't panic if you have a few flutters or if your heart races once in a while. If you have flutters AND other symptoms such as dizziness or shortness of breath (feeling like you can't get enough air), call 911 right away.

Drinking As A Pastime

There was a time in my life that I drank beer as my favorite pastime. Really, it's true. I of course only realized this after finally walking away from drinking, but the point is that drinking was literally what I did for fun. I always figured drinking was just kind of "along for the ride" , if you will, but finally realized that the act of drinking was my pastime. The interesting thing about this little Christopher Columbus like discovery I made was the fact that almost everyone I knew was just like me!

I've heard it said before that you become just like the people that you spend time with, but never gave it any credence. That was until I came to these realizations for myself. It's so perplexing to me, but most everything that I did at that time in my life, revolved around drinking beer. Well, maybe revolved isn't the correct term, but involved drinking beer. Going over to a friend's house to have a BBQ? Who's bringing the beer? Going to the lake fishing? Did you remember the beer? Playing cards in your buddies' basement? How much beer do you have? These are all the types of questions that were always asked. None of these so called "things to do" were about whatever it was that was being done, they were about the drinking!

Once my daughter incarnated into this world (which is another story) and I decided to walk away from drinking, I also walked away from all of these so called "things to do". Not as a conscience effort, but just naturally. I didn't see the "friends" or "buddies" anymore either. Once I stopped drinking they all faded away as well, again not consciously, but it just seemed to "happen". This is when I came to the realization that drinking was my pastime, none of the so called things to do or friends mattered.

Once I really started to analyze it, I also realized that this had been going on for 15 years! Drinking had been my favorite pastime for 15 years, and do you know what else was ironic? I was in about the same position, personally, as I was when it all started. It's almost as if those 15 years was a dream! A dream we would all rather not have by the way. The point is that by the grace of God my daughter came into my life and all of that came to an end. I've heard it said that everything happens for a reason, well now I know that statement to be true.
